2G and 3G modules support applications relying on the second and third generation of cellular networks – 2G modules support data rates of up to 85.6Kbps, while 3G modules support data rates of up to 7.2Mbps.

While these older technologies are reaching the ends of their lifespans and much is now said of their global sunsetting, the reality is still that 2G and 3G remain in widespread use globally, especially in markets where final sunset dates are well into the second half of this decade. Quectel therefore continues to offer our customers the modules they need to support applications relying on these technologies, as well as support and advice for migrating to the appropriate upgrades in preparation for final sunsets, most notably to LTE Cat 1, LTE Cat 1 Bis and LTE 450.

GNSS modules connect IoT devices to the Global Navigation Satellite System – a widely deployed and accepted way to determine location precisely without needing to rely on coverage by or the signal strength of cellular networks. It therefore underpins navigation, tracking and tracing of a wide variety of goods and assets and billions of GNSS IoT devices are now deployed worldwide.

However, GNSS applications are not one-size-fits-all and there are some challenges for organizations to find and adapt the right solutions. Where automotive solutions lack a clear view of satellites for instance, caused by dense buildings or bad weather, it can be very challenging for any GNSS module to provide an accurate position – which is compounded by multipath effects prevalent in deep urban canyons. Here, innovations such as dead reckoning can help, which can use information from sensors such as the accelerometer to augment the performance of GNSS positioning. Innovators need to know which approach works best for them – and that is where we can help.

Quectel’s wide range of ultra-compact, low-power GNSS modules cover the full range of requirements in standard precision, high precision, dead reckoning and timing. We can therefore support application scenarios as diverse as ADAS and self-driving to smart agriculture and micromobility. And, with unsurpassed aftermarket support services, the journey with us does not end with a purchase – that’s just the beginning.

To help our customers test their GNSS products, we provide access free of charge to our QGNSS evaluation tool software. QGNSS is compatible with all Quectel GNSS modules and enables real-time display and logging of all GNSS satellite and signal data. It also offers integrated AGNSS, NTRIP and firmware upgrade functions for RTK evaluation and supports NMEA, RTCM and Quectel proprietary streams. IoT antennas are essential in connecting any wireless device to communications networks – without an antenna, it can’t be wireless.

The crucial consideration for IoT device designers when planning solutions is what type of antenna they require. Is it for 5G or GNSS connectivity, or a variety of network types? Are size or weight constraints key? Protection against the elements may also be essential, or there may be strict demands for efficiency and gain.

Whether an embedded antenna can be sited on the device PCB, limiting the impact on device size and aesthetics – or whether an external antenna is required to limit the risk of interference and maximize accessibility post-build – can also make the difference in the ultimate success of an IoT device.

These decisions however are often neglected until late in the development process, resulting in unnecessary compromises and sub-optimal siting of antennas that could have been avoided with careful antenna design planning.

Quectel offers not only a wide range of embedded and external IoT antennas to support connectivity of all kinds, but can support its customers from the design stage all the way to testing and certification, and beyond to post-deployment technical support.

Sourcing antennas from a single supplier alongside modules and certifications can vastly reduce cost and time-to-market, simplifying the complex processes between conception and mass-market launch. You can browse our rapidly growing antenna portfolio via the pages below, and find the detail on the precise fit for your project.
