GNSS modules connect IoT devices to the Global Navigation Satellite System – a widely deployed and accepted way to determine location precisely without needing to rely on coverage by or the signal strength of cellular networks. It therefore underpins navigation, tracking and tracing of a wide variety of goods and assets and billions of GNSS IoT devices are now deployed worldwide.

Where automotive solutions lack a clear view of satellites for instance, caused by dense buildings or bad weather, it can be very challenging for any GNSS module to provide an accurate position – which is compounded by multipath effects prevalent in deep urban canyons. Here, innovations such as dead reckoning can help, which can use information from sensors such as the accelerometer to augment the performance of GNSS positioning.
