Classic N64 gaming meets modern connectivity: ModRetro selects FC41D MCU Wi-Fi module for M64 console

ModRetro, the US-based maker of devices that enable nostalgic technology products to be used on modern platforms, has selected the Quectel FC41D to provide internet connectivity via Wi-Fi to support over-the-air (OTA) updates for its M64 device. The ModRetro M64 enables users to play original Nintendo N64 cartridges on their modern TV or display.

The ModRetro M64 is compatible with original N64 cartridges and controllers on modern 4K displays, without losing the timing or the feel that made the games special. Custom electronics create an identical gameplay experience, with ultra-low latency, a five-second boot time and completely silent performance. The M64 is sold to customers across the world.

“Using Quectel’s module has allowed us to keep on target with our aggressive product timeline. Quectel has very responsive engineering support and was able to quickly help us resolve issues with our integration.”

Dylan Hart, software engineer, ModRetro

ModRetro turned to Quectel to enable Wi-Fi connectivity for the M64. They selected the Quectel FC41D, a Wi-Fi and Bluetooth module that offers 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.2 and 256KB of RAM and 2MB or 4MB of flash memory. The module complies with WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK and WPA3-SAE security standards and supports multiple interfaces including UART, SPI, I2C, ADC and PWM. Ideal for space and power-constrained devices, the FC41D has a form factor of 20.0mm x 18.0mm x 2.6mm and features many low power consumption modes.
