Quectel Receives Major U.S. Carrier Approvals of Qualcomm 9205 LTE modem-based Module

Quectel Wireless Solutions, a global supplier of Internet of Things (IoT) modules, announced today that three major U.S. carriers have certified its new-generation of LPWA module the BG95-M3 for operation on the carriers’ wireless networks. Being the industry’s first cellular module based on the cutting-edge Qualcomm® 9205 LTE modem to have earned U.S. carriers' approval, the BG95-M3 will permit OEMs to immediately deploy a diverse range of IoT devices across North America, such as asset trackers, smart meters, smart city sensors as well as wearable trackers.

Targeting global markets, the BG95-M3 module is a highly-integrated variant supporting Cat M1, Cat NB2, EGPRS and integrated GNSS. Compared to its predecessor, the module complies with 3GPP Release 14 and delivers enhanced capabilities in power consumption, data rates as well as hardware-based security.

By integrating RAM/flash, an ARM Cortex A7 processor supporting ThreadX, the BG95-M3 is engineered to reduce power consumption significantly in idle mode. This has the potential to support decade-plus battery life, which is critical for IoT devices usually serving long life spans. Additionally, BG95-M3 boasts a comprehensive set of hardware-based security features, including trusted applications running on the integrated TrustZone engine.

Adopting QuecOpen® solution, the BG95-M3 provides abundant external interfaces. Having QuecOpen® allows an OEM to use the A7 Processor and memory on the module rather than having to integrate a separate processor, RAM and Flash. BG95-M3 has a small footprint of 23.6mm × 19.9mm × 2.2mm and is pin-to-pin compatible with Quectel’s LTE modules EG91EG95 as well as LPWA module BG96. This allows existing customer devices to migrate seamlessly and upgrade by a simple drop-in replacement that will greatly reduce their design cost and development time.

“We are thrilled to receive the major U.S. carriers' approval, as it reaffirms our commitment to providing customers high quality and reliable products,” said Neset Yalcinkaya, Product Vice President at Quectel. “With its ultra-low power consumption and many enhanced features, the BG95-M3 module will further enrich the IoT verticals that require low-power, wide-area connectivity with cost-efficiency. Besides the BG95-M3, our BG95 family offers multiple variants for different regions and applications, which include BG95-M1/M2/N1/M4/M5/MF. These modules follow the same certification path, have the same footprint and can replace each other without the need to change application designs.”

“We are very pleased to see that Quectel’s BG95-M3, powered by our cutting-edge Qualcomm 9205 LTE modem, has received U.S. carriers’ approval,” said Vieri Vanghi, vice president, product management, Qualcomm Europe, Inc. “With its low cost, high energy efficiency and multimode capabilities, the Quectel BG95-M3 module will be important in ushering in the next wave of global IoT.”

The BG95-M3 module has obtained worldwide regulatory and conformance certificates including FCC, IC, CE(RED), RCM, GCF and PTCRB. The module is currently in mass production and being delivered to customers.
