The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) provides a well-understood, widely deployed and accepted way to accurately determine precise location. Billions of GNSS devices have already been deployed and underpinning navigation, tracking and tracing of vast quantities of goods and assets. But GNSS applications are not universal and relevant organizations need to find and deploy solutions that meet the constraints of their applications.

In eMobility, ride-sharing providers have to carefully balance accuracy, cost, power demands and the dimensional footprint of a GNSS module to ensure they select the optimum solution. Often, GNSS alone is not enough to pinpoint the location of small eMobility vehicles such as e-scooters so eMobility organizations typically augment GNSS with additional sensors and algorithms.

There are numerous challenges to successful GNSS in eMobility. On clear days when there are no obstructions obscuring vehicles in the street, GNSS can easily tell users and service providers where their objects are, but these circumstances cannot be relied on. Micromobility vehicles need to use other methods to boost their GNSS performance.

Dead reckoning solves many of the issues by combining wheel speed and inertial measurement unit (IMU) data with GNSS. The position accuracy can be affected by issues such as changes in tire pressure,
road vibration and atmospheric differences that all can affect the performance of the dead
reckoning engine when GNSS is challenged. In eMobility, dead reckoning can provide improvements to positioning in deep urban canyons or other areas where satellite view may be obscured.
