Quectel RM510Q 5G module slashes time-to-market for Razer Edge handheld gaming console

Razer, the world's leading lifestyle and technology brand for gamers, has selected the Quectel RM510Q mmWave 5G module for use in its Razer Edge Android gaming handheld. The latest device combines the unrivalled performance of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon G3x Gen 1 chipset with a 144Hz AMOLED display for great clarity at high speeds, the Kishi V2 Pro console-quality controller for compatible Android and Xbox games and 5G connectivity. The Razer Edge handheld 5G gaming console, which Razer claims is the first to offer 5G, has been optimized for Verizon 5G ultra-wideband connectivity for US users so they can game at home and on the move with reliability, low latency and fast speed.

“The Razer Edge is the ultimate Android gaming handheld, offering gamers their favorite AAA games on the go with zero compromise,” said Joey Hanna, the product marketing manager at Razer. “We used the Quectel RM510Q module to introduce the first 5G-enabled gaming handheld to the market because this mmWave 5G module enables gaming-grade connectivity in the US region. In addition, the RM510Q has a stable software platform that Razer could leverage to shorten time-to-market.”

Enabling 5G handheld gaming on the Razer Edge

The Quectel RM510Q is a sub-6GHz and mmWave M.2 5G IoT module measuring 52.0mm × 30.0mm × 2.3mm which meets the 3GPP Release 15 specification and is optimized for IoT and extended mobile broadband (eMBB) applications. It supports both standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) modes, and also supports LTE Cat 20 connectivity. The RM510Q-GL is compatible with Quectel’s LTE Cat 6 module EM06, LTE Cat 12 module EM12, and LTE Cat 20 module EM20, enabling customers to migrate from LTE-A to 5G.

The module optionally features integrated GNSS for rapid and precise positioning, while integrated eSIM optionally allows remote account provision without needing to open the device. The RM510Q-GL supports nearly all major carriers worldwide and is ideal for globally deployed mobile devices including industrial routers, industrial PDAs, rugged tablet PCs and digital signage.

“We’re delighted that Razer selected our RM510Q mmWave 5G module to enable its customers to access 5G connectivity for the first time,” says Michael Wallon, SVP Sales APAC & ANZ, Quectel Wireless Solutions. “While carrier certification can be complex we have the experience, skills and capabilities to accelerate and simplify the process. We’re pleased to have helped to bring a new generation of gamers desktop-like gaming experiences thanks to 5G connectivity.”

The Razer Edge needed to ensure certification from US carriers and a key attraction of the RM510Q for Razer was Quectel’s compatibility with carrier requirements, along with reliable manufacturing, technical support and competitive pricing. “The RM510Q allows seamless connection to the Verizon mmWave network thus creating a very low latency gaming experience near to that of a desktop gaming machine,” explains Hanna. “Our specific challenges were passing technical acceptance for the carriers during certification and we were able to use the Quectel module and achieve technical acceptance quickly and easily.”

“Quectel’s vast ranges of services and resources allows the development and certification stage to be executed smoothly,” he adds. “The development of a mmWave device is quite complex and, in addition, requires cross-regional cooperations between the various parties involved. Quectel has shown it has the resources and expertise to support the project effortlessly.”
